i've been hit with a curse
for the past few years i've noticed that i have some sort of curse or very sucky superpower, which is that i tune into TV or radio broadcasts right before a serious/significant/breaking news story happens.
off the top of my head at midnight, here are three events i've somehow managed to witness right as i tune in content advisory for some serious stuff:
- saw that the oscars were on and decided that it wouldn't hurt to watch. couple of minutes later will smith slaps chris rock. i thought it was scripted until the tv suddenly went mute, then i went, "wait... huh?"
- had surgery recently, while recovering i had to distract myself or the pain would kick in. while trying to sleep i found out that the best way to distract myself was to listen to KNX radio news from LA. went ahead and tried to take a nap, KNX streaming from my phone to my earbuds as the sound of the announcer started to take me to sleep. they went to some sort of recorded interview with someone about something that happened somewhere, suddenly it cuts to serious music and KNX BREAKING NEWS. announcer comes back, "uhh we're getting news that shots were fired at a Trump rally...", cue the audio of the video that we've all seen by now, of the failed sniper getting Trump's ear. needless to say, i didn't nap that day.
- now yesterday, but earlier on the 23rd while scrolling youtube i saw that yet another car chase was happening in LA. that always happens, not really a major event unless OJ Simpson is inside. still, i watched it, just expecting to see them follow a car for a few minutes before clicking away out of boredom. the driver swerves across the freeway, helicopter reporter saying, "woah, she just jumped!". as i pay attention to the screen again, i realize this car is going too fast, and a curve is coming. this was not going to look good. and it didn't. the car tried to take the curve but instead hit the sand and rolled over aggressively into the freeway overpass below, while reporter and anchors freaked out. there was a small gap between the freeway overpasses, so i looked over to see if the car would fly past it. it didnt, and that's when i realized that the driver was at best, severely fucked up, at worst, dead. sure enough, the helicopter went over to get a "better" angle, and the mangled car was on full display. its been confirmed the driver didn't make it
all of these are things that we can branch out into some serious discussion points, honestly. but honestly i write about it because i have witnessed other events that are out of my recent memory, and it's started to freak me out a little that i've been witness to all of those. i'm quite hesitant to tune in to political events/rallies recently out of irrational fear that somehow im gonna witness something bad. i guess its not so irrational now with the tense atmosphere, but i feel like it's based more in these weird coincidences than the political atmosphere right now.
